President’s Message

Make Time for Conference 2017

Message from the President || Robert Weinberg

How many times have we heard people say, “I cannot believe where the summer has gone”? This summer was a perfect example. Short and wet and tough to get exterior repairs completed. But at ACMO, we never stop. In regular communiqués, tweets and newsletters, ACMO strives to keep its members aware of consultations concerning the new Condominium Management Services Act, 2015 (CMSA) and the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015 (PCOA). The latter made substantial amendments to the Condominium Act, 1998, and also enacted the CMSA to regulate and license condominium managers. We will continue these efforts, and will be providing feedback on the most recent draft regulations which will prescribe requirements in the areas of “Complaints, Insurance and Other Requirements” and “Code of Ethics and Discipline and Appeals Committees”. Information about the proposed regulations is posted on Ontario’s Regulatory Registry for public feedback and consultation within a prescribed time period.

These are exciting times for professional condominium managers and management companies. There will no doubt be challenges as licensing becomes a reality; however, I remain optimistic that in the long run this represents a coming of age for professional managers and is a change that will be welcomed by boards and homeowners.

Notwithstanding the legislative and regulatory changes, we must continue to meet our regular business responsibilities and obligations. This includes making time for professional development and growth. The ACMO/CCI-T Condominium Conference provides one-stop-shopping of the highest calibre.

A dedicated team of volunteers from ACMO and CCI Toronto & Area Chapter, with the staff of both associations, has built Condo Conference 2017 based on feedback on past programs. The Opening Session will bring the most recent report on where we are today. Fifteen breakout sessions offer content for each of our target audiences; and floor sessions are clearly promoted on the program. Saturday will open with a presentation by CAO and CMRAO; and close with the ever-popular Case Law Update. Professional speakers are also featured on the program. In response to delegate feedback, breakfast is back on the show floor on both days as is the Friday Wine & Cheese Reception!

There are over 240 vendor booths, and Saturday Trade Show hours have been extended to run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The conference program is an exceptional opportunity, and we ask managers to share the promotion with their boards as well as the Trade Show Only option for Saturday. Visit www.condoconference.ca for full details and early bird deadlines or call the ACMO office. We look forward to seeing you there.

In closing, I remind managers of the importance of the RCM designation when applying for your General Licence, and our current offer to waive the reinstatement fee for those who have let their designation lapse. ACMO has spent 40 years educating and promoting professional property management and shall remain a pillar in the Ontario condominium industry through its educational program (one of the requirements for licensing), continuing education, member benefits and advocacy.

Thank you for your continued support!
