ACMO’s First Decade 1977–1987: The Formative Years

Last Word || unknown

In 1977, a small group of volunteers realized the growing need for a single source of information for the province’s early condominium managers and condo owners. The idea for the Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario was conceived.

Pioneers. Visionaries.

During ACMO’s early years a strong foundation was established contributing to the stability the Association is experiencing today. ACMO’s first Board members recognized that condominiums were evolving as a ‘new housing lifestyle’ across Ontario and it was time to grow with them. Here are some highlights from ACMO’s first decade:

  • The Registered Condominium Manager (RCM) designation was first issued in 1984. In 1987, there were 50 RCMs in Ontario.
  • In 1984, ACMO held its first Annual Networking Weekend for ‘managers who share the same concerns and stresses.’ Golf Days was celebrating its 4th anniversary. Trade Shows were getting bigger. Then and now we couldn’t do it without the contributions of our professional services and trades.
  • ACMO was then and is today an education-focused association. Partnerships with colleges were being established. In 1987, talks began with Humber College for a co-sponsored professional level certificate program for condominium managers.
  • In 1987, ACMO’s Board of Directors had completed an in-depth set of proposed changes to the Condominium Act, 1967, which was the first-ever condominium legislation in Ontario!

Today’s membership owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to ACMO’s founding directors. ACMO’s bylaws, ethics, professional development and education course materials, membership, election of directors and more, came about from their combination of hard work, enthusiasm, fortitude and compromise. It wasn’t always easy.

Through incredible foresight, a strong foundation was built for future directors and members to keep the vision of our pioneering founders alive and flourishing. Thank you!
