President’s Message

Determination and Focus

Message from the President || Robert Weinberg

By the time you read this, another winter will have come and gone.

Usually wintertime for property managers is the slow season as we make our plans for the spring/ summer plantings, repairs and maintenance, but at ACMO it has been anything but slow.

In late January, your Board of Directors spent two days at the annual planning retreat wherein many issues were discussed and very concrete plans/decisions were made for this fiscal year. One of those items was a Resolution to increase the number of directors to serve on this Board and to establish regional representation from outside the GTA. As a result, on February 17 we held a successful Special General Meeting of members and received overwhelming support to ratify the Resolution that will see our Board increase from 9 to 11 members at the April 21 AGM, and then to 13 members by 2019. The meeting also received an updated policy guideline establishing four (4) regions for Ontario, to ensure representation opportunities for RCMs working outside of the GTA (South & West, GTA, Ontario, East Ontario and North Ontario). We encourage our members, and especially non-GTA members, to submit nominations for the upcoming election as we elect five directors to fill vacancies and the two new positions.

We have attended regular meetings with various MPPs including the Honourable Tracy MacCharles, Minister of Government and Consumer Services, members of the CMRAO and Ministry staff responsible for drafting the regulations under the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015 (PCOA) and the Condominium Management Services Act (CMSA). We continue to plan and attend as many meetings as possible to solidify ACMO’s partnership in the delivery of education for the new condominium manager licencing program. We are proud the Ministry has recognized ACMO core education as the benchmark for the licencing program (as detailed in Section 12 of the regulations), which is scheduled to commence July 1, 2017.

We have submitted our feedback on the first 43 regulations under the CMSA, and over the next year, we will continue to submit feedback to the government on the periodically released segments of the draft regulations for both the CMSA and PCAO.

We, along with our partners at CCIToronto, have been busy planning for the 21st Annual ACMO CCI-T Condominium Conference to be held November 10 & 11, 2017. There will be some interesting improvements we are sure delegates will enjoy.

Your Board of Directors will continue to work hard for its members, including the development of new events for continuing education and enhanced resources. Our new reference library is scheduled to be launched this summer. Watch for eblasts which will provide more information.

As we all get busy with our planning for the warm weather season repairs and maintenance of our clients’ properties, we must remember not to lose focus of the reasons why we work so hard: our families and friends. Please ensure you work to strike a balance between both personal and professional obligations. Spend time with loved ones and take time for yourselves.

“Life is not a dress rehearsal.” Enjoy!
