Build on Our Services; Expand Opportunities

Message from the Executive Director || Amanda Curtis

With a 41-year history representing professionalism in condominium management, ACMO will continue to respond to change and build on the services it offers to members across Ontario. Our Association has been mandated to offer specialized education for current and future licensed condominium managers; however, ACMO is also committed to bringing unique services with a cross-industry focus to managers, management companies and the associates that form an integral part of successful condominium management.

Our members continue to note the importance of ACMO’s active government relations and advocacy roles. It has been clear from the outset of the election campaign, that the incumbent government was heading for defeat, and as a result, we took steps to proactively establish relationships with whichever party – PC or NDP – ultimately formed the new government. As CM Magazine goes to press we now know the Progressive Conservative Party will form the new Government. While we do not know who the new Minister of Government and Consumer Services will be, ACMO is well positioned to maintain and enhance our strong relationship with this Ministry, its political staff, and the bureaucrats who have policy responsibility for the condominium sector. In addition, we will continue to expand the network of opportunities for members to be heard on a myriad of legislative and regulatory initiatives that affect condominium living.

We also recognize that licensed condominium managers may have cause to seek support when decisions are being made about their professional lives. The provision of access to legal resources through ACMO RCM membership is a step in this direction.

Meeting its agreement with Government, ACMO has prepared three new manuals to reflect today’s legislation. In May of 2018, Condominium Law, Administration & HR, and Physical Building Management were available to colleges across the Province. A new Financial Planning manual will be introduced in courses beginning in July 2018.

ACMO is also preparing for a province-wide increase in the uptake on Challenge exams. These exams are open to managers who have been granted the Transitional General Licence (requiring 2 years’ experience) and who also had 5 years’ experience prior to November 1, 2017 when licensing came into effect. Applications for a Challenge exam with references must be submitted to ACMO whereas applications for a licence go to the CMRAO. As licensing moves towards its second year, we will continue to make every effort to bring clarity to the roles and responsibilities of ACMO and the CMRAO.

Condominium management in Ontario is evolving at a different pace in different regions, and this evolution will bring both challenges and opportunities. Where better to keep up to date with trends than at Condo Conference. Back for its 22nd year, this joint ACMO/CCI-T event will take place at the Toronto Congress Centre on November 16 & 17. Association conferences offer invaluable education and networking opportunities, and with new reduced rates for our members, you won’t want to miss it!

The simple truth for professional associations is that to be relevant we must deliver what our members want now, while identifying what they will need two or more years from now. We encourage our 1,000+ RCM members to provide feedback and guidance to our Board, and we thank ALL ACMO members for their continued support.
